8. Take a look at the keywords you’re targeting and see which ones you get rankings for, and which ones are driving traffic. Knowing how people are finding you is key to understanding what your customer needs are and where further opportunities lie for your company.

7. Take a look at your web stats from 2007. Why you probably needed to in order to complete 2008, this time try to get a sense of what visitors are looking for on your site, what content is appealing to them and why they leave. All this information will help you build a better site with stickier visitors.

6. Content should be topping your ‘to do’ list of new initiatives for your site this year. Start with writing a snappy article about your industry.

5. Next on the content initiative front — write a press release and distribute it using a reputable service like PR Web.

4. Now that you’re on a roll, why not start a blog? You KNOW you’ve got great insight about your industry you’re just itching to share. And SEO-friendly wordpress is only an easy install away.

3. Of course, you can’t just blog in a vacuum. Make today the day you start introducing yourself to other blogs by commenting — you’ll not only be helping the blogosphere become a better place, but you’ll attract referral visitors to your site and might even make some friends.

2. And why not try something different, like a pay per click campaign? Google AdWords is simple to get up and running, and while there’s a lot to mastering it, you can immediately see which of your top keywords are driving traffic.

1. Most importantly, the best thing you can do for your website is to set goals you know you can achieve. I know, I know, this is from the “quit smoking” or “start an exercising” school of thought, but nothing is more important to a website’s success than constant diligence. Comment on a blog every day, write an article a month, or commit yourself to finding links from relevant sites and business partners… your rankings (and pocket book) will thank you.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Keep apprised to SEO Vision all 2008 for more and more SEO tips, the latest news from the search trenches, and secrets to building effective search strategies for your business
