Have you been naughty or nice? Now we have online proof

This is an entry in our daily Internet Marketing Advent Calendar series. Each day your favorite marketing elves will focus on a new topic to get your internet marketing in order before the start of the new year.

Santa used to have a pretty tough job trying to determine if every little boy and girl had been naughty or nice. With new advances in technology, Santa’s job has gotten a lot easier. There is now a public record of the things we have done, the people we are friends with and even photos and videos of our moments over the past year – it is called our Facebook page, our Twitter profile, our personal blogs, websites and more.

When people are looking up your company, or even you, what kind of information do the find? Be an armchair detective and try looking up yourself, your company, industry terms or even your competitors. Take a step back and consider if you were a potential client trying to make a buying decision; would you find information that was helpful, hurtful, embarrassing, outdated or just completely wrong?

Maybe you were nice all year but your public tweets are negative or spammy. If someone is looking you up on Twitter (or a search engine that pulls in data from Twitter) your negative tweets are a negative reflection on you. No matter if you are sweet as a fruit cake or not, if all you produce is negative content you come across as negative.

Your behavior online may be the qualifier when someone is in the research process. For many, you are only as good as the content you produce, especially when people are researching everything and anything online.

Mind what you say or do online, because you don’t know who is making decisions about your business on the content you are publicly sharing.

PS – I wonder if Santa has started using some type of aggregator to sort all his data?
