This is an entry in our daily Internet Marketing Advent Calendar series. Each day your favorite marketing elves Kasi and Amanda will focus on a new topic to get your internet marketing in order before the start of the new year.

Social Media Bahumbug Number 1: People will say bad things about our company

The excuse I hear most often from businesses scared to participate in social media is that they are nervous that users will say bad things about their company online. The response is… “Of course!”

They could already be saying bad things about you online and just because you aren’t in the space doesn’t mean people aren’t talking about you. Your customers expectations of your relationship is changing.

Your customers are using this space to find information and they are starting to expect that you are too. If you are not, you could be missing out.

Stop being afraid of what people might say. For all time humans have been revealing to their personal network how they feel about products and services. Now with social media we as businesses have the unique opportunity to hear what they are saying. Social Media didn’t invent criticism it just gave us as businesses the chance to hear it.
